Rescued dog becomes rescuer

This is a wonderful story of a true hero and a tragedy averted. A dog recently rescued form an animal shelter warned their new master of a dangerous blaze, saving a life and creating an amazing journey from being saved, to becoming a rescuer in turn.

“Property manager Christina Eichler from Cusack Partners told Stuff the man who lived at the address was one of her clients and had lost all his possessions – but owed his life to his dog. The man suffered from smoke inhalation but the fire could have killed him, if his new best friend had not roused him. ‘His dog actually bit him and woke him up. If his dog wasn’t there, he wouldn’t be here,’ she said. Eichler said the man was a father but fortunately his children were not staying at the home when the fire started.

“She said the dog, Hazel, was safe and well after saving the life of the man who saved hers just days before. ‘He only adopted it days ago to try to save its life, so he saved the dog’s life. He’s such a good person,’ she added.

“Dora Motateanu from JDC Rescue said the tenant’s decision to adopt Hazel had definitely saved her life because she was destined for the pound. ‘That’s amazing,’ she said of Hazel’s lifesaving efforts. ‘I mean this is why we do this, for those moments when we see dogs finding their families.'” (Source: “‘A genuine treasure’: Dog saved from pound saves new owner from house fire,” by Chris Marriner, May 22, www.stuff.co.nz).

5 stars – a wonderful story of karma and heroism. Total upside!

National Icon stops playing national anthem

A few years ago I stumbled across something that I thought was rather incredible. Apparently my Fisher and Paykel washing machine could play the national anthem. I turned doubter to believer in about five minutes as I followed the simple instructions and marvelled at the very familiar tune coming from washing machine. Fisher and Paykel had programmed this into their machines for many but recently said that it is a function that will not be included in new models from now on.

“’While we fondly remember the national anthem embedded into our washing machines from years gone by, they no longer can play national anthems,’ [chief product lines officer Katrina] Glenday confirmed. ‘Rather than a decision against the national anthem playing, this has really been a shift in focus towards product intelligence, informed through our research into the science of fabric care.’

“And for those wanting to play at home, this is how your older machine will play God Defend New Zealand: put your machine in demo mode by holding down ‘power’ and the ‘advance’ buttons together. You should then hold ‘wash temp up’ for two seconds. (Source: “Out in the wash: Why your Fisher and Paykel washing machine no longer plays the national anthem,” by Hamish McNeilly, May 15, www.stuff.co.nz).

5 stars – there’s still good news here – older models are still belting out our national anthem and if newer ones don’t then you can just sing it yourself!
