Kiwi classic gets rough treatment
Obviously we all have different tastes when it comes to food and we don’t all like the same things. This week, however, a stone cold Kiwi culinary masterpiece gained notoriety when ranked 17th on TasteAtlas’ 100 worst rated foods list. The ‘dish’ in question was the marmite and potato chip sandwich. Personally I think this a rough deal.
The sandwich is question is a versatile snack, unbowed to tradition. It is great with any bread, fantastic with vegemite or marmite, and can contain any flavour of the utterly amazing types of potato chip we currently have available. It’s so good I’m surprised our cousins across the ditch haven’t claimed it as their own.
Compared to the other entries in the list our humble sandwich gets a raw deal.
“In the list updated on January 8, Blodpalt, a Swedish dish made from dumplings filled with reindeer or pig’s blood came at number one, followed by Bocadillo de Sardinas from Spain, a sandwich filled with canned sardines. In third place is Calskrove, a Swedish pizza stuffed with hamburgers and French fries.” (Source: “Kiwi classic Marmite and chip sandwich makes world’s worst foods list,” by Sanda Arambepola, January 13, www.stuff.co.nz).
5 stars – as a nation known for its food, I’ll happily let the chip and marmite sandwich get any attention at all. It’s fantastic.
Elderly couple rekindle romance after 48 years divorced
This is a lovely tale. In the US, Bob Wenrich and Fay Gable have remarried after they were divorced in 1975. Seems these two had an amiable and amicable divorce after their marriage hit a rough patch and were remarried recently after their prospective spouses passed on.
“[They] were married under a tree in a relative’s backyard, a few weeks after Fay learned she was pregnant, in 1951. She was 16 and Bob was 21, but they were in love and decided to make a go of it. But 24 years later, in 1975, their marriage hit a rough patch and the couple divorced.” (Source: “US couple remarry 48 years after divorce,” by Cathy Free, January 13, www.nzherald.co.nz).
The couple’s youngest daughter, Carol invited them to family get-togethers recently as she noticed they were lonely and their love and connection consequently re-blossomed.
“The pair began dating again, sneaking off more often to the casino to play the slots and share a few laughs over dinner. ‘We reconnected like two teenagers,’ Fay said. ‘We got to know each other all over again.'” (Source: “US couple remarry 48 years after divorce,” by Cathy Free, January 13, www.nzherald.co.nz).
Fay and Bob married again in early December last year.
5 stars – a lovely tale of love and life and reminds me very much of two of may parents’ friends who divorced and then married again in their twilight years.
Ancient dinosaur tracks found in the UK
In a remarkable recent discovery, evidence of a dinosaur highway has been found in Oxfordshire, England. Nearly 200 footprints, over 166 million years old, are the first example of dinosaur paths found in the United Kingdom.
“The remarkable find, first spied in 2023 when quarry worker Gary Johnson sensed “unusual bumps” on the ground while extracting limestone for road construction, has been nicknamed the ‘dinosaur highway’ as a nod to the extensive pathways left by these prehistoric creatures.
“Around 100 volunteers from the University of Birmingham and the University of Oxford collaborated this past June for one week, excavating the tracks and recording as much information as possible about the expansive site.
“The discovery holds particular significance as it aligns with the 200th anniversary of the first-ever described dinosaur, the Megalosaurus, which was found in Oxfordshire in 1824.” (Source: “Nearly 200 Jurassic footprints unearthed on ‘dinosaur highway,’” by Julianna Bragg, January 8, www.edition.cnn.com).
