Taking a look at recent, positive, uplifting, news stories and yarns, from New Zealand and all around the world, to bring a smile and a bit of cheer.

Bees rob beekeeper’s shop

This story is yet another astonishing example of the ingenuity of the other creatures on our planet. A swarm of bees recently raided the honey at a shop in British Columbia, Canada, scaring the experienced beekeeper in the process.

“Christine McDonald, owner of Rushing River Apiaries in British Columbia, told CBC it was the first time ‘robber bees’ had infiltrated her honey shop to hunt for food. Despite working with bees for years, she said this situation frightened her. ‘I think that’s the most panicked I have felt.…There’s thousands of bees, I don’t know where they’re coming from, and I need to protect all of the honey,’ McDonald said.

“After finding a good food source, bees will return to their hive and do a “waggle dance” to tell others where the food is, McDonald told CBC. McDonald has had robber bees attack her beehives before, but it’s the first time they managed to get inside her store. ‘[Fall beekeeping is very intense — trying to help bees hunker down against other bees and wasps and keep the food stores that they’ve worked so hard for,’ she said.” (Source: “Thousands of robber bees undergo honey heist at Canadian beekeeper’s shop,” September 10, www.stuff.co.nz).

5 stars – there’s such a perfect poetic justice to this story and I think that’s why I love it so much!

Movie prop sells for 3 million dollars

I read a few weeks ago about an upcoming auction in the United States where one of the most talked about items up for sale was the lightsaber used by the actor who played Darth Vader in two of the first three Star Wars films. The auction has since passed and the item in question was sold to one eager and well-off fan for the mighty sum of $US$3,654,000.

“Three million dollars. That’s how much one lightsaber from the original Star Wars trilogy was sold for last week. Not just any lightsaber though. It’s the original lightsaber wielded by the late actor David Prowse during the filming of the sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

“More specifically it’s the very same lightsaber seen in the iconic ‘No, I am your father’ scene from ‘Empire,’ where Luke finds out he’s Vader’s son. The purchase makes the lightsaber the highest-valued item from the Star Wars franchise.

“So far, the fan has yet to be identified – and it’s probably for their own good. I’m sure they don’t want their friends knowing they have that much money and they probably don’t want their enemies to know they wield so much power now.” (Source: “Darth Vader’s Lightsaber From Original ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy Sold For Millions At Auction,” by Dempsey Pillot, September 8, www.thedisinsider.com).

5 stars – it’s mind boggling the prices people pay for movie props. Still, this will be one very happy fan, I imagine.
